As we approach the U.S. presidential election in November 2020, we are providing regular updates and developments from the campaign trail.
Candidates for the Democratic party nomination for president are continuing their campaigns, while positioning themselves to take part in their third national debate—
tonight, September 12—in Houston, Texas.
Based on stricter polling and fundraising criteria, only 10 candidates qualified to participate in the debate (although another 10 candidates are still in the running).
Tonight's debate will feature these
10 Democratic candidates for the first time on a single stage: Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren,
and Andrew Yang.
On the Republican side,
President Trump, who was elected in 2016, is seeking re-election to a second term. The Democratic and Republican parties' political conventions will take place in July and August 2020, respectively, during which their presidential nominees will be officially elected.
The winner of the 2020 presidential election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2021.
