2018 Look Ahead

Happy New Year!

2017 was an exciting year for Blue Star Strategies. To continue to provide effective and top quality services for our public and private sector clients,
we welcomed four new colleagues and expanded our Europe and Latin America practices. We grew our institutional affiliations and made significant investments in our marketing and communications portfolio.

Our 2017 client portfolio took us to over two dozen countries around the world, from the halls of U.S. Congress to Latin American capitals to Directorates-General of the European Union. We engaged with United Nations agencies, the World Bank Group, and the International Monetary Fund on behalf of clients. We were inspired to chart new and creative ways to accomplish our clients' objectives. Throughout the year, we worked to build international partnerships, strengthen democratic values and the rule of law, support inclusive economic growth, and promote high standards for transparent business and regulatory practices.

In 2018 we will be engaging across a number of business, governance, and policy arenas for our clients with interests in the United States, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and around the world:

In the United States...

  • The Trump Administration concluded its first year in office with its first major legislative accomplishment, a new tax reform bill signed into law by President Trump in December. The Administration touted federal deregulatory actions as a hallmark of its approach, which it says will continue apace in 2018. Healthcare reform, however – and a full repeal of Obamacare – has so far proven elusive to the President and the Republican leadership.

  • The Administration recently released its new Congressionally-mandated National Security Strategy, outlining its view of global challenges primarily seen through the lens of America’s economic interests and competitiveness. See an analysis here and here.

  • In 2018, high profile issues that the Administration and Congress are set to debate, or have otherwise prioritized, include: Infrastructure, Immigration, Healthcare, Welfare, Housing, Trade Re-negotiations, Budget and Spending/Debt Limit, Iran, and North Korea. This, while the Trump-Russia investigation continues on the sidelines.

  • The U.S. Congress recently averted a government work shutdown – although only temporarily until the next deadline on January 19 – while it continues to debate the finer points of a potential budget deal to keep the government open and running.

  • U.S. midterm elections are set for November, with governing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate at stake, as well as Governorships of 36 U.S. states and three U.S. territories.

Globally...

  • World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland –January 23-26
  • International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Spring Meetings in Washington, DC April 20-22

In Europe...

  • Bulgaria and Austria will each hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first and second half of 2018, respectively.
