June 19th's second round of elections saw Gustavo Petro, left-wing leader and former guerilla member, winning with 50.44% of the vote. His election caught many by surprise in a country that typically leans to the center-right, and following the election analysts were skeptical for his governance due to some of his political intentions, as well as his close relationship with Venezuelan President Maduro. However, his appointments so far have been praised by commentators on both sides for their expertise.

Gabriel Sanchez Zinny on Education: Diplomacy is Not Enough
At the beginning of July, more than 140 education ministers from around the world met in Paris. These diplomatic meetings are important, but more are needed to facilitate investments and government actions to enact the policies discussed at these meetings.
