Jeff Gedmin Joins Board of Justice for Journalists Foundation
|
|
|
Jeff Gedmin joined the Advisory Board of the newly created Justice for Journalists Foundation, founded by the prominent Russian exile dissident, Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
We asked Jeff about the Foundation and his inspiration for joining it:
Q. What is the mission of the Justice for Journalists Foundation? Why was it founded?
JG: : The impetus for the foundation’s establishment was the recent murder of three Russian journalists killed in an ambush in the Central African Republic. The three journalists had undertaken
an investigation of the activities of a mercenary group linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and previously deployed in Syria and Ukraine. The mission of the Justice for Journalist Foundation is to support independent investigations into crimes against journalists—world-wide.
Q. What drew you to want to be involved?
JG: I worry today about democracy in retreat, and our urgent need to preserve responsible, independent journalism around the world. Too often when journalists are jailed or killed we denounce the perpetrators, yet little more gets done. It’s hard work to bring culprits to justice. It takes time, money, legal assistance,
and political capital. We hope this new effort, working with other important groups already active in this realm, will bring fresh energy and focus to holding those accountable who seek to intimidate and deter free and independent journalism.
Q. What will be the impact of the Foundation?
JG: Let’s see if the Justice for Journalist Foundation can make a mark. The name says it all in terms of short term aims. Over time there will be success if the enemies of free media turn out to be the
ones in retreat.
Q. What will be your particular role and activities within the Foundation?
JG: I look forward to working with fellow board members and the foundation’s executive leadership team to help set our strategic direction, to raise monies, and to spotlight the foundation’s important work.
